AQABA, Jordan (EP) -- A basilica recently unearthed in the Red Sea resort town of Aqaba may be the oldest church in the world, according to archaeologists.

Until a month ago, it was believed that the oldest structures in Jordan dated to the late fourth century. But archaeologists say the newly discovered mud-brick building may be a century older.

Some older churches have been found in eastern Syria and northern Israel, but those were originally constructed and used as houses, then converted for use as a church. If the dating on the Aqaba find is confirmed, it would be the oldest known building to be designed and constructed as a church.

The building was located within the walls of the ancient Roman city of Aelana. It is 28 yards long and 16 yards wide. Its walls, ceiling, and basilica are still intact, and a black cross is visible on a white plaster wall. One small room contained about 100 coins dating from about 280-360 A.D. Archaeologists believe the building was buried by desert sand during an earthquake in 363 A.D.
