제임스 가필드 대통령의 그리스도의 교회 성명서

순교자 제20대 미국 대통령 제임스 A. 가필드(James A. Garfield)는 평생 그리스도의 교회(Christian Church)의 교인으로 살다가 별세하였다. 그는 대통령이 되기 전 다년간 교회에서 설교자로 사역하였다. 그는 어떤 숙녀로부터 믿음에 관련해서 우리의 입장에 대한 좀 더 명확한 개념을 성명서로 작성해 달라는 요청을 받았다. 가필드 대통령이 작성한 성명서는 다음과 같다.

1. 우리는 스스로를 그리스도인들(Christians) 또는 제자들(Disciples)이라고 부릅니다.
2. 우리는 하나님 아버지를 믿습니다.
3. 우리는 예수께서 그리스도시요 살아 계신 하나님의 아들이시며 우리의 구주이심을 믿습니다. 우리는 그리스도의 신성을 그리스도교 체계의 근본적인 진리로 간주합니다.
4. 우리는 회심의 대리자로서 그리고 그리스도인의 마음에 내주하시는 성령님을 믿습니다.
5. 우리는 구약성경과 신약성경을 하나님의 영감으로 된 말씀으로 받아들입니다.
6. 우리는 장차있을 악인들의 형벌과 의인들의 상급을 믿습니다.
7. 우리는 신성이 기도를 들으시고 기도에 응답하시는 하나님이심을 믿습니다.
8. 우리는 매 주일 주의 만찬의 제정을 지킵니다. 우리는 그것이 모든 주님의 자녀들을 위한 주님의 식탁이라고 말합니다.
9. 우리는 하나님의 백성의 연합(union)을 간구합니다.
10. 성경은 우리의 유일한 규칙서(discipline)입니다.
11. 우리는 모든 의식들(ordinances)이 사도시대에서처럼 행해져야 한다는 점을 견지합니다.

President Garfield

Our martyr President, James A. Garfield, who lived and died a member of the Christian Church, and was for some years a preacher in the church, was once requested by a lady to formulate a statement which would give her a more definite idea of our position in matters of faith. The following is a copy of Mr. Garfield's statement:

1. We call ourselves Christians or Disciples.
2. We believe in God the Father.
3. We believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and our Savior. We regard the divinity of Christ as the fundamental truth of the Christian system.
4. We believe in the Holy Spirit, both as to His agency in conversion and as a dweller in the heart of the Christian.
5. We accept the Old and New Testaments as the inspired Word of God.
6. We believe in the future punishment of the wicked and the future reward of the righteous.
7. We believe that Deity is a prayer-hearing and prayer-answering God.
8. We observe the institution of the Lord's Supper on every Lord's Day. We say it is the Lord's Table, for all the Lord's children.
9. We plead for the union of God's people.
10. The Bible is our only discipline.
11. We maintain that all ordinances should be observed as they were in the days of the apostles.
